Of all the many currencies trading on the international foreign exchange markets today, none excite so much interest, whilst being enfolded in such a cloak of mystery, as the Amero currency. The name is both familiar and yet unfamiliar; it sounds as if it should be traded, but by whom? Some see the Amero currency as a hopeful sign of economic progress and prosperity, others as a willful conspiracy by the Federal government to emasculate the Dollar.

One Amero = one Euro?

So what is the Amero currency and why does it invoke such a contradiction of emotions? The answer lies partly in the name; the Amero currency is in fact conceived as a New World equivalent of the Old World euro. The euro is a super-national currency, created by a coalition of willing European governments, eager to take the perceived benefits of a single market onto its logical conclusion, a single currency. Initiated in 2002, it sought to make trade easier, and centralize monetary policy, for its 16 members.

The Amero is seen, by its backers, as an equivalent sole currency for North America, to be used by the members of the North American Free Trade Agreement; that is the USA, Canada and Mexico. The promoters of a North American currency union include a broad range of Canadian economists, and prominent Mexican politicians, and some in the US. They see their economies benefiting hugely from such a vast zone sharing a single currency, with reduced risks of currency movements, and easily comparable prices.

Ameros for sale now

But a proposal is what the Amero currency remains - you cannot trade, or buy it. Or can you? There are coins called Ameros available on the internet, in copper, silver and gold, from one to a thousand Ameros. Those selling them claim to be doing so privately, purely for collectors, but many see the hidden hand of the US Treasury behind this, as it seeks to familiarize US citizens to the idea of the Amero currency.

Radio shock jocks have seized on the coins as evidence of the long feared global conspiracy to subvert the US, and install a New World Oder, complete with a new world currency, based on the internationalist principles of the UN. They see the US as losing national sovereignty, and free born Americans as losing liberty, by a replacement for the Dollar.

But whether you believe the wild fantasies of the fringe, are intrigued by the powerful idea of an alternative to the dollar, or maybe are just interested in owning a collectible coin, the purchase of some your own Amero currency would certainly spark much discussion when presented at the shop till!
