Silver Investing

Posted by staff writer

For thousands of years, precious metals, especially gold and silver have been used as a form of currency, as well as an investment medium. Even though silver is no longer used as legal tender in the United States, the world of silver investing has never been brighter.

The popularity of silver investing typically has much to do with the economy as a whole, along with swings of the stock market today. Because silver is used for a wide variety of reasons, from jewelry to manufacturing processes, and even for electricity generation, it is to be a very stable investment that can provide reasonable returns. Silver investing can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Below are some of the most common forms.

How To Invest In Silver

Silver coins can easily be purchased from many local coin dealers, antique dealers, and even online. Making use of current silver pricing guides will help you to determine the current value of the coins with regard to their weight. It is important to note that if you plan to invest in silver, you should only be purchasing non-collectible coins or silver bullion. Silver bars are another option for many investors; however you must be sure you are purchasing the bars at a fair market price.

Silver Mining Stocks

Another way investors get into the silver market is to purchase silver mine stocks. These investments are in actual companies that mine silver from the Earth. Since most of these companies process silver as byproduct of gold and other mined materials, there is more diversification with these stocks.

Silver Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

Investing in silver exchange traded funds (ETFs) has become one of the more popular ways to invest in silver. These funds are considered to be fairly stable by the mainstream financial community, as they allegedly hold the assets of silver producing companies and/or actual silver. An ETF is purchased and sold through a stock market in a similar fashion to a traditional stock, and is considered to be quite easy to enter or exit when financial market conditions are normal. Since there is no need to purchase and store physical pieces of silver, many people prefer this investment option. There are several giant problems, however, with the gold and silver ETFs. For more info about these problems, you should read why you need to avoid the precious metals ETFs.

Even though silver investing is more stable than other forms of investing, it still comes with risk. The most popular form of silver investing today, silver ETFs, comes with even more risk. The main concern with these types of ETFs is that, unlike having an actual piece of silver in your possession, you never actually know what is happening with your investment, and you do not even know if you actually own any physical silver. While many ETFs promise low risk with good returns, they actually may not even be investing your money in silver. Take a look at the fine print of ETF agreements; you may notice statements such as, “your investment is intended to constitute a simple and cost-effective means of making an investment similar to an investment in silver.” Even though the investment may be backed by cash, it may never be backed by silver. In fact, your investment may be held in a trust owned by a bank. ETF managers cover their interests by technically disclosing this information, albeit vague and often misleading. In times of volatile economic conditions, possessing an investment that is backed by a bank owned trust could be quite risky, resulting in much more loss than you were led to believe.

In these uncertain economic times, as you wrestle with the question "what's currently the best way to invest money," and with the coming financial crisis in the U.S., owning actual physical silver that you have in your possession will likely prove to be a wise investment. Silver cannot not be debased to the point of becoming worthless the way that fiat currencies can. Silver is always in demand and is absolutely necessary for our modern electronic society. Silver has functioned as money for centuries upon centuries. These are just some of the reasons that make silver investing a very lucrative and worthwhile decision.
